Henry Chalfant Widely known for his photo archive of New York City subway graffiti and early Hip Hop culture (1977 - 1987), his photos documented one of the most formative and volatile subway painting eras. A Greek History Major at Stanford and stone sculptor, he photographed trains out of fascination for their creativity and artistic merit. His casual photography soon became a consuming project, one he felt deserved immediate attention because of the temporary nature of works, which were subject to the "Buff" (acid washing) by the NYC Transit Authority. By 1978, graffiti was a pandemic throughout all five boroughs of New York City and writers were refining what the previous generation had invented. It is through Henry's photos that you can explore the evolution of style and its mastery by artists such as Noc167, Lee Quinones, Kel First, Dondi White, T-Kid170 and others. With so many train productions happening weekly, Henry chose to focus his eye on the IRT subway lines for its high concentration of masterpieces.
