Keith Haring

Kutztown 1958 - New York 1990

Untitled 1983

With his iconic motifs, Keith Haring, who died  at an early age, left an indelible impression on the world. On the 1980s, he filled the empty poster frames in New York subway stations with chalk drawings that resembled graffiti tags. These were often an activist response to the burning issues of the time: AIDS, apartheid, drug abuse, the struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community.

An advocate of accessible art, Haring also put his 'products'to commercial use. Conversely, he responded laconically to the accusation that he had moved his work from the streets to elitist museums: 'Over the last years, I've worked all over the world. And yes, if you do something in New York that people like, the world knows. We're living in the space age.'
