Out on Palermovej in Amager lay the old gate out into the rolling mill where the Nordic Cable and Wire Factories were based. The area also housed the Volund Enginering Factory and before that the aircraft factory Nielsen and Winter. When the factories closed down at the end of the 1960s the older factory area at Amager Strandvej became a political hot potato that was allowed to bake for over 30 years. In 1986 the graffiti painters of the city discovered this area abandoned by time with huge decayed and empty halls with hundreds of meters of wall for free use. Up to the year 2000, when new super apartments shot up from the ruins of the past, this was one of the classic spots in the city for painting legally. As a free space for stoned youth it was mainly in the years 1986-87 that the Rolling Mill supplied the walls for the creativity of the graffiti painters.
