Located on Fountainblue Blvd in Miami, "The Penit" was a huge building believed to have been an abandoned, patially constructed penintentiary, which played a critical role in Miami's graffiti history. Upon its discovery in the 1980s it became a safe haven for writing and practicing letter styles where early writers would paint, undisturbed from the risks that painting in the streets carried. Writers were able to see each other's creations in this defacto "Hall of Fame," featuring many of the most revered pieces of the time. Soon, the seemingly unlimited space on the building bacame scarce, so writers began to paint over older works, destroying some original art.
These select photos are from the earliest days of the Fountainblue Penit, as well as it's smaller counterpart the Airport Penit, on NW 7th St. Also included, are images from the summer of 1985 from the Kendall Town & Country Mall, which while still under construction, hosted Miami's first graffiti contest on its perimeter wall.
