Born in cities like New York, Hartford, and Providence, the graffiti movement made its way down to Miami in the early 1980s - primarily as a result of migration from Caribbean countries to the northeast and to Florida. Many immigrant families seperated and were putting down roots in both locations and often when a "rebellious" teenager was caught writing graffiti in New York their strict parents sent them to live with relatives in the south. The budding artists brought their fashion sense, their dance moves and importantly their graffiti stylings to Wynwood and other Miami neighborhoods. The result was a development of style masters like Airborn, Rier, Swif, Cee67, Cast and others in South Florida in the years before graffiti and Hip Hop went global. These living, breathing practioners of the urban arts, and their interactions with local kids seeking to express themselves, kickstarted the Miami graffiti scene and gave neighborhoods like Wynwood, Little Havana, and Westchester a head start in the cultural tsunami that was just around the corner.
